While the opportunities for lead generation are stacked, it's often confusing which communication method is best. If you're looking for a quick and efficient way to communicate with leads to build interest and begin the sales process, short code campaigns have fantastic potential for your business!

If you're looking for a quick and efficient way to communicate with leads to build interest and begin the sales process, short code campaigns have fantastic potential for your business!

Short codes are 5 to 6-digit phone numbers that are a powerful tool for SMS marketing, particularly in lead generation. With number recognition and a branded keyword, like ‘HOMES’ for real estate or ‘LOANS’ for mortgage, leads and customers can associate your campaign with your business.

SHORT CODE FOR LEAD GEN

  • Keyword campaigns
    • example:“Text PARADISE to 123-456 to be entered to win a 6-day stay in Maui!”
  • Mass messaging campaigns
  • Immediate engagement

The most important part of using a short code is getting an opt-in list. Because campaigns are specifically pre-approved for use after people opt-in, you can send a variety of marketing communications to your distribution lists. This happens by advertising the short code, keyword, and the benefits offered by listing it on your most-visited sites. These includes:

  • Company website
  • Landing pages
  • Google listing
  • Social media profiles
  • Print/advertising collateral

Let’s say you run a direct mail and billboard advertising campaign. On the billboard and flyer, you ask people to text KEYWORD (this can be anything) to your short code. Depending on campaign parameters, that keyword could trigger an informational response with an accompanying URL, or simply a welcome message introducing the program.

SHORT CODE CALL TO ACTION EXAMPLES

  • Text 'SUBSCRIBE' to receive new content (newsletters, blogs, webinars)
  • Text 'DEMO' to schedule a demo
  • Text 'OFFERS' to receive a product or service coupon
  • Text 'HELP' us with questions
  • Text 'WINNING' to enter to win

These types of CTAs on marketing collateral can send you leads faster than landing page forms or email replies. The convenience of remembering a keyword and short code is easier than asking leads to “call today,” or expending energy to know more. But if someone texts a keyword to your short code, you have an actively interested lead who is primed and willing to learn more - and they initiated the connection.

Improving customer engagement directly affects lead gen efforts because you’re building rapport through information sharing without overwhelming your prospects. You can link to more content or offer discounts, which receive fantastic response via SMS. Either way, you’re keeping your contact list primed with branded interactions, which makes it more valuable for your bottom line.
