Work From Home Like a Boss

1. Have a designated work space

Make sure this is separate from where you sleep and lounge, so you can maintain some sort of balance between your home life and work. Whether its a desk, your kitchen table, or you have a home office, this is a necessary factor to stay productive and motivated every day.

2. Maintain a routine

Take breaks, have lunch (away from your desk) and go outside throughout the day to clear your head and get fresh air. Making an effort to do this every day will establish a healthy workday routine for your mind and your motivation.

3. Establish boundaries

Having boundaries that you hold for yourself, like sticking to a start and finish time each day, is so important. Boundaries will keep you from overworking and having a schedule you can count on, and also establish some work life balance, if you haven't already.

4. Prioritize communication

Work hard to communicate efficiently with your coworkers, managers, or whoever you report to. Be available at all times throughout the workday (unless otherwise stated). Communication is essential when working remote; if your communication skills aren't strong, this is one area you should prioritize improving upon. Test out various communication platforms like Skype, Slack, Google Hangouts, etc. to have an easy way to jump on a call or video chat.

5. Mix it up occasionally

While having a routine is the smartest way to be successful working remote, sometimes you might want to mix things up. Head to a local coffee shop or a shared workspace for a nice change of scenery and a fresh wave of motivation.

6. Get ready for the day

Get ready for the day like you're going into an office. Shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, and then get started. Studies show people are more productive in the workday if they are properly dressed, fed, and ready to work.

7. Discuss working expectations

Sit down with your roommates or spouse or whoever you live with and talk about your work environment and what you need from them when they're home.  Maybe you want the TV to be off when you're working, or when you're on a conference call. If they want to have people over, perhaps they can notify you the day before so you can prepare and make plans to work elsewhere. Set some expectations that aren't unrealistic, but respectful for everyone you live with. New Call-to-action
