Routine... it gets a bad rap but ultimately, can provide a substantial amount of productivity and balance if handled correctly. This post centers around establishing a routine that fits your lifestyle and using it to your advantage.

While a daily routine is an important part of being successful in your work life, there are various habits you can adapt into your daily life that can help lead to balance, more productive work days, foster creativity and improve your overall happiness.

1. List out what you didn't complete today, so tomorrow you can start with a win

  • Whatever you don't finish today should be the first thing on your to-do list for tomorrow.
  • Whether you do this in list form, go old school with Post It notes, you set reminders on your Slack channel... whatever it takes to get done! Setting this habit encourages follow through and completing tasks, along with the ever-important reminder to stay organized!

2. Work, take a break, repeat

  • Did you know our focus wears off after about 90 minutes of screen time? When it does, don't fight it. Get up out of your chair, turn off your screen, stretch and disconnect for a few minutes.
  • Giving your mind that few minutes of refresh after a hard 90 minutes of focus time is a great habit to develop. It trains your mind and your body that breaks are where you recharge, and work time is when you grind.

3. Make the right lifestyle choices

  • When it comes to physical activity, diet, and work life balance, these are all habits that take time to develop, but ones you will use throughout your entire life.
  • Start small by exercising twice a week, removing bad foods one by one from your diet, and up the intensity from there.

4. Unplug and refresh

  • Whatever you do for work, whether you're at a computer all day, on the phone, or something totally different, make sure you spend time each day away from those things. In this digital age we're living in, the majority of jobs are fueled by technology which can be a blessing when it comes to travel and convenience, but balance must remain.
  • Unplugging from technology every day should be at the top on your list of habits to train yourself in mastering. Starting fresh each day is key for your overall health and happiness.

5. Learn new things

  • Explore your curiosities, let your mind to wander, try new activities, pick up new hobbies; these are all great ways to stay on your toes and keep yourself sharp.
  • Habitual curiosity isn't something everyone is born with but you can certainly create your own; simply by saying yes to things you wouldn't normally (within the scope of reason, of course) or by exploring things that seem appealing to you in any way.
