Common Goals are Invaluable to Camaraderie

Explicitly communicating common goals are absolutely essential to the survival of the modern company, and the teams within those companies. Here are just a few of the reasons to prioritize ensuring that even your deepest specialists always know the big picture. 

Explicitly communicating common goals are absolutely essential to the survival of the modern company, and the teams within those companies. Here are just a few of the reasons to prioritize ensuring that even your deepest specialists always know the big picture.

Modern employees, companies and even whole industries are rewarded for specialization. Within a company, deep knowledge of a subject definitely increases individual productivity on certain tasks. However, it can also increase isolation. Even so called "soft" disciplines such as marketing are now full of dense terms like "agile development," "Scrum," and intense acronyms (DDSM, CRM, etc.) that can definitely put the brakes on a conversation with IT or finance.

Specialist's Geometry

Perhaps you remember first drawing angles in 8th grade geometry and how your pencil quickly zoomed out across the page as you moved it away from the center of your measurement. With enough distance, the endpoints of very small angles ended up quite far away from each other. This is the dilemma of two specialists who are trying to communicate with each other. Even specialists in the same department who start off close will end up far away from each other without a common goal to bind their efforts together.

If two employees finish a project using their own individual processes, those projects will be almost impossible to merge at their endpoints without extreme changes to standardize those processes.

Initiative

Whether we admit it or not, we all know that our companies rely on the work that employees do outside of the job description. This doesn't mean 8 hours of overtime; it means using those hidden skills and internal relationships to solve problems and build little solutions that aggregate into larger, company wide initiatives over time.

Initiative can only be present when a common goal is communicated; otherwise, no one knows how to direct their extra effort. Moreover, informal alliances are difficult to form when there is no structure or goal present to empower or build around. The smart manager/executive knows how to keep the vision of a company first and foremost in the minds of employees so any extra energy can be streamlined into a productive activity on the fly.

Morale

Everyone loves to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Google, Apple, and other successful and public facing companies have such low turnover rates because of employee morale; not paychecks or benefits (but those do help, of course!). The number one driver of morale: vision. Employees want to know that their work is important and recognized. Communicating a common goal to everyone at once accomplishes this more effectively than any department meeting or individual assurance.

Companies like Facebook, Apple and Google achieve this widespread communication through an intracompany blog. It is always big news when Google shares some of the contents of its internal bloggings - entire markets move on the information. However, the major takeaway is that stating a common goal and reinforcing it through daily communications is an invaluable strategy the larger that your company gets. 

If your employees are asking a lot of "why" questions, it is possible that the company is lacking a visionary structure. Make it a point to communicate common goals. You will likely find that people will invoke more of their own initiative, produce at higher rates and conform their specialties into more productive builds from the start of a process rather than waiting on orders to compromise.
